Shading your eyes from the sun this spring and summer season should be a top priority for your eye health. The sun supports all life on earth, but it also can be damaging to your vision. The sun sends out two types of ultraviolet rays that are harmful to your eyesight. It is imperative to protect your eyes from both UV rays.

UVA Rays

The UVA rays are known to pass through the cornea to reach the lens and retina inside your eyes. Research suggests that overexposure to UVA rays can cause vision loss through the development of cataracts and macular degeneration.

UVB Rays

The UVB rays are considered to be more intense than the UVA rays. The UVB radiation is moderately filtered by the ozone layer but can still be dangerous to your vision. UVB rays are completely absorbed by the cornea and can lead to photokeratitis. Photokeratitis is also named “snow blindness.” This painful inflammation of the cornea can turn into temporary vision loss lasting 24 to 48 hours.
